What We Do in the Light
This project taught me a lot about myself as a designer. I devoted my efforts into creating an immersive audio-visual experience that would allow the audience to reflect on our relationship to the natural environment through technology. The concept began from investigating some of the earliest forms of artistic expression in nature and the general practice of Biophilic Design. This research continued to expand toward technology’s relevance in the natural world. This is where I came across LiDar, a laser technology used for mapping out land by creating thousands of contact points and relaying them back to the laser to detect depth of field. I was able to code my own point cloud using Processing and various other languages.
The purpose of this project was to bring to light the manner in which we as humans have neglected the natural world. The audience’s engagement with the LiDar allowed them to see themselves in this natural environment in real time a point cloud. Natural vanity in the human psychology meant that the audience would only take interest in the piece once they were able to see themselves within the setting.
